Handheld app change log

Purpose: Look up what changed in a handheld app release.

When to use this: When a device is on an older version than you expected, when you're checking whether a fix has shipped, or before you escalate.

Current release: 104. The version code increases by one per release and never resets, so a higher number is always the newer build. The device shows it as v104.0, see checking your version.

  • Offline sales are now reported. Previously, approved offline sales were only on the device so a card could settle without a way of tagging it offline. A daily check now forwards and uploads approved offline sales, reporting progress per invoice. App prevents new sales while the check runs.
  • The app now has a faster fallback when the internet is down but the network is up. The reader believes it can still reach the host and waits out the full timeout on every sale. After two failed attempts at pinging Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1), the app switches to offline and stores immediately. A successful ping restores everything back.

  • In Mobile Terminal mode the POS is now answered as soon as the payment is approved, before the receipt prompt. Previously the app waited for a receipt option to be selected before answering, and employees would often press cancel on that prompt, so the app sent a cancel and the original authorisation never went back to the POS.
  • A decline answers the POS straight away as well. The error screen still comes up for the operator afterwards, and its cancel no longer sends a second answer. Because the POS is answered early it can send the next transaction while the receipt prompt is still up. The app finishes the previous one as if No Receipt was pressed, including the post sale reader reset, before the new transaction takes the screen. On the error screen the retry button is gone in Mobile Terminal mode, where a local retry does not apply, and the prompt reads "Please remove card".

  • The scan screen can now take a card swipe. A button arms a swipe read so a non payment card, member or gift, can answer a scan request that is waiting. It is reported back as a swipe rather than a scan, so systems that only expect scans are unaffected.
  • The first read wins. Any other completion, a cancel, or a timeout releases the reader, so it is never left sitting on a dead swipe prompt.

  • Reader resets no longer overlap. Previously they were spaced on a fixed timer, and a reset on the A77 takes about 4 seconds, so the resets at startup collided and returned 003002 on every boot. Each reset now waits for the previous one to finish.
  • Cancel no longer strands the device on the dialog. The cancel sequence has a timeout and recognises both spellings the reader reports, which is what left A77 lanes stuck behind the blocking dialog.
  • One action no longer registers twice after the app is recreated.
  • If the app's request listener fails to start, the app no longer crashes or stays unreachable for the rest of the session.

  • PAX specific behaviour is now gated by one switch in the cloud config: the extra resets at startup, the reset on cancel, banner hiding, and the hardware scanner.
  • Preset employee lockdown on the employee PIN screen is now managed from the cloud.

Order & Pay refinements:

  • Tax is previewed before payment, so the amount charged is the tax inclusive total. The footer shows subtotal, tax and total.
  • A receipt screen appears after a check is created and paid.
  • Checks no longer fail with "Tip Service Charge not found" on sites that have no tip service charge configured. Previously the payment was sent together with the check in one request. The check is now created first and the payment applied second, and tip fields are left out entirely when there is no tip.
  • The tender used for created checks is configurable, and revenue centres are configurable with an in app selector.
  • Sign Out drops the employee and the cart and returns to the employee PIN screen. The session is kept so the next employee only enters their PIN.

  • Order & Pay added: an item grid with POS style category colours, search, and a chit style check panel. Swipe a line right to add one, left to remove one.
  • Barcode scanning added. The PAX laser runs only while a scan session is open, from the scan key or the on screen button, so it is off when idle and switches off once it reads or after about 5 seconds. Reads resolve to menu items, with a clear item not found message. QR and other 2D codes are not accepted on this path.
  • A short input lock on the order grid stops a carried over touch from the login or PIN screen adding an item.
  • VP3300: the reader reset now waits for the in flight transaction to clear first.
