Modes of operation
The handheld app ships defaulting to Order & Pay, which expects the point-of-sale to be running on the same device. The other modes are how the app flexes to different devices and workflows.
Two things to know up front
- Switching mode is a single toggle. You open Device Settings, find the Payment Mode section, and flip the mode. There's no reinstall and no special build.
- The recommendations below are guidance, not rules. They're the setups that tend to fit each environment best, but you can run whatever mode fits how you work.
The modes
| Mode | What it is | Often used for |
|---|---|---|
| Order & Pay (default) | Takes the order and the payment on the device, with the POS running on the same device. | General service |
| Mobile Terminal | Acts as the card reader for a counter workstation. | Bar |
| Pay-at-table | Pull up an existing check and pay it at the table. | Dine-in |
| Check Streaming | Mirrors the check to a customer-facing display. | Retail |
| Solo / Standalone | Key in an amount and take payment, with no POS. | Quick standalone charges |
| Self-Checkout / Kiosk | A locked-down kiosk the customer operates. | Unattended checkout |
How to switch modes (any mode)
- Open Device Settings with the unlock gesture.
- Find the Payment Mode section.
- Toggle the mode you want (each mode page has the exact control and any extra fields).
- Tap Reload if prompted, then Close and Back To POS.
